Safety and Contraindications

In view of the "regulatory action" of acupuncture, it is difficult to stipulate absolute contraindications for this form of therapy. However, for reasons of safety, acupuncture should be avoided or performed with extreme caution in the following conditions.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, it is mandatory that you inform your Acupuncturist before treatment.

  • Acupuncture may induce labour.
  • It should not be performed during pregnancy unless required for specific therapeutic purposes.
  • Certain acupuncture points may cause strong uterine contractions and induce abortion.
  • It may be used with great caution for inducing labour or shortening its duration when clinically appropriate.

Medical Emergencies & Surgical Conditions

Acupuncture is contraindicated in medical emergencies.

  • First aid should be provided immediately.
  • Patients should be transported to an emergency medical centre.
  • Acupuncture should never replace necessary surgical intervention.

Malignant Tumours

Acupuncture should not be used for the treatment of malignant tumours.

  • Needling directly at the tumour site should be avoided.
  • It may be used alongside other medical treatments.
  • It can help relieve pain and other symptoms.
  • It may reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and improve quality of life.

Bleeding Disorders

Needling should be avoided in individuals with bleeding or clotting disorders.

  • Patients with bleeding disorders.
  • Patients with clotting disorders.
  • Individuals receiving anticoagulant therapy.
  • Individuals taking medications with anticoagulant effects.
